Johannesburg Global Day of Climate Action 2009

This morning, 1000 Climate Activists from Earthlife Africa (ELA), Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee (SECC), Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance (VEJA), the Anti Privatisation Forum (APF), Ceasefire Campaign, Greenpeace Africa and other community based groups gathered outside the Gauteng Legislature in Johannesburg to add their voice to the thousands worldwide calling for Climate Justice Now!

We demand that world leaders institute a scientifically valid and socially just agreement at Copenhagen. We need a post-Kyoto agreement that is Fair, Ambitious and Binding and that listens to the science that says 350 parts per million of carbon in the atmosphere is the safe upper limit for our future.

Makoma Lekalakala, Programme Officer at Earthlife Africa Jhb, states, “While politicians and business leaders all seek to protect their carbon intensive industries, the world’s climate is degrading rapidly. Africa, in particular, will see droughts, famine, floods and rising sea levels. We will be doing the dying if nothing is done. We demand a just and fair deal at Copenhagen.”

The overwhelming message of the day was ‘We here in Africa will not die quietly. We demand Climate Justice Now!’
