Last night I attended the final of the University of South Africa’s (UNISA) 2009 String Competition.

I was in awe of the talent and grace of the finalists who may be the ages of 16, 21 and 22 respectively but they were equal, professional competitors with careers cultivated from as young as 5 years of age. The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra accompanying these lead violinists were as impressive as always.

There is something about the classics that allows me to live in the music. It embraces me, taps into my aspirational side and reminds me to appreciate the beauty and chaos of life. The 16 year-old competitor Jaqueline Wedderburn-Maxwell had such clear focus in her performance that I was reminded that there are certain points in life that transcends the ages and we are able to meet each other where we are.

To Vicente Espi; well done to an energetic and outstanding performance. You engaged me with every note strung. To the winner, Avigail Bushakevitz – simply magnificent!
